The Book Club (and Pot-Luck)

The Reno Friends Book Club meets on the third Friday of every month at 5:30pm at the Friends meeting house.  You are welcome even if you have not read the book.  Please bring a dish to share.

The book that has been selected for the December book group will be God and Empire: Jesus against Rome, Then and Now by John Dominic Crossan.

In the book God and Empire Crossan surveys the Bible from Genesis to Apocalypse, or the Book of Revelation, and discovers a hopeful message that cannot be ignored in these turbulent times. The first-century Pax Romana, Crossan points out, was in fact a "peace" won through violent military action. Jesus preached a different kind of peace—a peace that surpasses all understanding—and a kingdom not of Caesar but of God.

The Romans executed Jesus because he preached this Kingdom of God, a kingdom based on peace and justice, over the empire of Rome, which ruled by violence and force. For Jesus and Paul, Crossan explains, peace cannot be won the Roman way, through military victory, but only through justice and fair and equal treatment of all people.  (from Barnes and Noble)

We will meet on December 5th at 5:30pm at the Friends Meeting House.  As always, please join us for the pot-luck.

The book we have decided to read for the meeting on January 16, 2009 will be A Wind In the Door, by Madeleine L'Engle.  This book is the sequel to A Wrinkle in Time.  This book would be great for any of kids in the meeting who would like to attened the group and enjoy the pot-luck.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions!

.
Philip Gulley Porch Talk – By Philip Gulley

Beloved American storyteller Philip Gulley evokes a time when life revolved around the front porch, where friends gathered, stories were told, and small moments took on large meaning. In today's hurry-up world, Gulley's observations are frank and funny, reminding us of the world we once shared, and can again.

With poignancy and humor, Gulley writes about small-town life, things he thinks about while sitting in his Quaker meeting, and why Donald Trump should pay more taxes. Porch Talk is a tribute to common folk, including Charlie the hardware priest, the Bettys at the newspaper, and other paragons of decency not many people know, but should.

In March, the Quaker Book Club read a book by Dr. Joan Borysenko,  St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City hosted Dr. Borysenko the weekend of February 29-March 2.   The topic of her Friday night talk was Spirituality and Health, based on her expertise in Mind/Body integrative medicine. If you want more info about her, please take a look at her website at www.joanborysenko.com.
